I have been working on exactly such a setup recently. It is a bit
tricky, but most definitely can be done. I am working on a document
describing how to get everything up and running, but it isn't completed
yet. You can find it at
http://web.morgul.net/~frodo/docs/kame+freeswan_interop.html

The document doesn't describe the configuration of the actual IPsec
implementations (KAME and Freeswan) yet, but describes the creation of a
CA, of the host certificate requests, and of certificates.

If you post the errors that you're getting, I might be able to provide
more immediate help to you, if you don't want to wait for me to complete
the writeup I'm working on...
