[Users] configuration between a subnet

Hi , I am new to freeswan & Ipsec. I would like to know whether it is possibe to install freeswan between 2 hosts in the same/different subnet. The 2 subnets will not be across the Internet. The 2 hosts reside behind the gateway which is connected to the outside Internet. Before installing freeswan in the companys gateway, i would like to see its functionality within my subnet.

e.g Gateway connected to the outside internet : 202.53.23.22

Subnet 1 : 192.168.6.0

Subnet 2 : 196.1.109.0

Can freeswan be installed on any 2 hosts on the above subnets for checking.
