I read Claudia's reply of August last with great interest.
I receive all my mail via a mail server with a virus extension (.com,
.exe, .pif, .scr etc) scanner *and* a spam scanner, so these things
never get through to my - Linux hehe - workstation.
However, I noticed that Claudia thought that most of the posters on this
list are sysadmins. Well, maybe those sysadmins can configure their
exclusively Microsoft virus scanners *not* to send virus notifications
back to the list. They should have sufficient nouse to be able to do
that, the alternative is for their orgs to get rid of them and pay for
someone who has. My own Linux-based smtp server sends notification of
each rejected mail (not spam, that's accepted, logged and stored in a
cesspit) to the list-admin for FreeS/WAN. I reckon that's your
punishment for choosing not to run a closed list (you don't have to run
a content scanner, at all - I do that).
A little while ago, the Netfilter/iptables list remotely hosted by
samba.org was swamped with spam that it distributed to all subscribers -
no viri. Harald Welte of the core iptables group refused on principle to
content-scan, couldn't anyway because he wasn't hosting the list. He
turned it into a closed list and there has been not one spam since.
Thanks for taking the bother to answer to the previous poster.
Best,
Tony
