I know, I shoud RTFM before posting, shame on me... :-(

The problem was the gmp library, which I compiled on a
PIII system without explicitly specifying the target CPU.
So the configure script decided to include special features
for the PIII class of processors, which of course are not
available on Pentium class CPU's...

I now re-compiled libgmp with "--build=i386" (general purpose
case), and now FreeS/WAN works even on the K6-400 system.
