This may be naive, but why not make the list closed *BUT* provide a means
for those who wish to post anonymously to do so through the web-site. That
would elimiate much of the spam and viruses (and the virus alerts) that have
been plaguing this list, but without preventing those who have a genuine
wish to post (even if they want to post something completely irrelevent!) to
do so. I suppose that some might consider this a form of censorship though
as you would still be applying some restrictions of sorts?
Alternatively what about adding in a header which indicates whether the
poster is a list member or not, so those inclined can sort their incoming
mail appropriately. Although that might devalue the list to non-members as
they may be less likely to get a reply.

the master lists. However, we have no objection to your creating a copy
of the list and filtering that. At one point, the folks at exim.org had
