Hello everyone
With regards to these annoying "Test" messages that seem to come in huge
bursts, just a suggestion for the list admins, that I hope won't impinge
on the freedom & accessibility ideals that are of paramount importance
to maintain...
I just tried checking to see if the email account 'test_at_china.com'
actually existed on the listman server, and it returned "Non-existent
address" to me.
So my guess is that somehow the list server is simply forwarding all
Emails received to it, regardless of whether the originating user has
registered to receive Emails back from the list or not...
Now, it's my thinking here that seeing as we have to enroll (and then
CONFIRM our enrollment) to receive the messages, then how come that same
criterion can't be used to SEND messages to the list? The public
webforums I guess would be another way of posting anonymous or spoofed
messages, which can't be helped (if someone wants to logon to the site &
forms to do so) but I think that the Listman lists should only accept
Emails from registered users or from approved website
servers/forms/forums... IE: Those people who have specifically ASKED
to receive messages from the FreeS/WAN community should be the ones
ALLOWED to post to it as well. If someone does not want to register,
then they have to use the website list mechanism anyways to look and/or
post into the info. So freedom of expression is preserved. But I think
abuse will be minimized as well, such as this 'test' message.
Oh, and as a mechanism for list enrollment??? If the originating user
is NOT an existing member of the list, then politely refuse their
message, and send them back a reply with the enlistment instructions to
let them become a member of the list. If nothing else, if a test user
wants to enroll (with the associated confirmation process) at least we
know that the Email address is valid, so it shouldn't cause problems
once enlisted.
Opinions anyone???
Robert
