[Users] Newbe: RedHat 7.2 - freeswan 1.97_2.4.9_13 - kernel 2.4.7-10

Hi,

I naively tried to install FreeS/WAN: Under "Installing FreeS/WAN"
(http://www.freeswan.org/freeswan_trees/freeswan-1.95/doc/install.html) I
found many information about compiling the source and patching the kernel,
but I thought I could skip this, because on ftp.xs4all.nl/.../RH7.2 I found
a ready-to-go rpm. Since I found neither a readme in the download directory
nor a hint on the installation page, mentioned above, I simply did an
"rpm --install" for both rpms. During the next boot I got many error
messages like KLIPS and Module ipsec not available, Pluto is not running ...
I thought that's what I install with this packages. Furthermore the system
complains that ipchains was not running. I followed the recommendations in
other newsgroups to switch from ipchains to iptables and as I understood the
installation notes mentioned above, that should be ok.

Meanwhile I suspect that "freeswan 1.97_2.4.9_13" means, it is only usable
with kernel "2.4.9._13" and not with my "2.4.7-10". Therefore I tried to
deinstall the packages, however this is not possible either: The "prerun
scriptlet" failed, with similar errors as mentioned above, and therefore the
whole deinstallation routine stopped.

Question: How can I get rid of the erroneous installation? What is the most
straightforward path to a new installation.

Christian Barmala
