When you have generated the private key using OpenSSL:
openssl genrsa -des3 -out gatewayKey.pem 1024
Passphrase: just a silly passphrase
then you can directly import this key file into FreeS/WAN by
copying gatewayKey.pem into /etc/ipsec.d/private and inserting
the line
: RSA gatewayKey.pem "just a silly passphrase"
into /etc/ipsec.secrets.
