Integrating strong crypto into the Linux kernel is great to
have but hardly earth shattering news any more. Here is just a partial
list of strong cryptography that is currently being shipped in many
Linux distributions (i.e. exported on CD-Rom and available for download
from US hosted sites such as RedHat)...
OpenSSL (varios crypto libraries)
PGP ('nuff said)
Sendmail (SSL)
Pop3d (SSL)
Imapd (SSL)
Fetchmail (SSL, GSSAPI)
Mutt (SSL)
Pine (SSL)
LDAP (SSL)
Mozilla (SSL)
Lynx (SSL)
Apache (mod_ssl)
Bind (Secure DNS)
Samba (Various, including SSL)
OpenSSH (well, duh)
Kerberos
CIPE (VPN)
Loop-AES (Encrypted file systems)
No doubt others, I'm forgetting...
Compiled and available right out of the box.
Many of these, like Bind and Sendmail and Fetchmail, have their
own home sites here in the US and have had crypto integrated into their
sources for a long time, now.
Integrating crypto into the kernel in the main kernel source
tree is almost an afterthought at this point. Crypto is pretty much
prevasive and rapidly becoming ubiquitous in distributions and products
exported from the US. All legal. The barn doors have been opened
and blown off the hings. This horse is loose and running wild. IMNSHO...
I don't even think God could pull it back again, now.
