Hello -
I noticed you sent an inquiry to the list, then a private inquiry to me. I am not the expert, but here are a few tips:
The concept of "left" and "right" networks is documented very well on the web site - be sure to take a look at this. You decide which side you want to call "left" and "right" and you can install freeswan on one, the other, or both. Remember that freeswan is a Linux implementation of IPSEC - there are lots and lots of other implementations on lots and lots of other platforms.
There is an entry in the archives about that ipchains problem. Evidently, one of the scripts looks for an ipchains file and tries to start it if it finds it. But you are running iptables. Check the archives - there is a fix in there and I don't remember the details.
I don't know what's going on with your broken shell problem - since you are running Red Hat 7.1 with an updated kernel, I would suggest updating to Redhat 7.3 or 8.0 and the latest freeswan first, before doing any extensive troubleshooting. It is very possible you are running into problems where older versions of software do not get along with newer packages.

Subject: Ask for help
Mr GregScott,
How do you do?
I am a freshman to use freeswan-1.99.My machine:redhat 7.1(I have update kernel to 2.4.19).There are some questions need help:
1.Where will I install freeswan ?In left and right gateway? In all machines in left and right LAN?
2.I updated linux kernel from 2.4.2-2 to 2.4.19.After installing freeswan,I enter "/etc/rc.d/init.d/ipsec restart".Then it will show:"ipchains:Protocol not available".But you know, ipchains is replaced by iptables.
So I download iptables-1.2.7a and "make","make install".Then I type"make menuconfig",select "Netfilter ..." in "Network Options",and select "ipchains (...)support".
I recompile kernel.
However,Ipsec is absolutely broken --- "....Broken shell!".
Would you please to give me some answers? Thanks a lot!
