[Users] kernel 2.4.18 patch required ???

I'm planning on using FreeSWAN 1.99 on an embedded product to implement
IPSec. I am using kernel 2.4.18 on a PowerPC based system.

Is a kernel patch required for 2.4.18 kernels or is all the code there
in the stock standard kernel (except for the user space apps ofcourse) ?

I've downloaded 1.99 and read the docs and Makefile. I'm using a
configuration managment system called Aegis and I maintain the kernel
under this system. I create a changeset and work on the kernel.
Assuming that Freeswan patches are required, I would have to apply them
to the kernel in my development directory. This is _NOT_
/usr/src/linux. I assume that setting KERNELSRC will tell the build
system where the kernel source is located. Yes/No ??

At this stage, I only want to apply kernel patches. ie. not build all
the user apps, etc. Can this be done? How??

Can Freeswan kernel modules be developed/built outside of the kernel
source? If so, how??

After that, I want to build all the Freeswan apps. I assume I can build
these anywhere. If so, how ??

I hope this makes sense.
Many thanks,
Brendan Simon.
