Yes, it matters very much. Packets to be encrypted and sent through the
tunnel must get to the VPN gateway somehow. The easiest way to do that
is to make the VPN gateway the default gateway for the LAN. If making
the VPN gateway the default gateway is not possible you'll need to put
static routes on each host on your LAN that route protected networks to
the VPN gateway.
